Lenten Season ft. Pandemic
Lent is a 40-day period that comes before Easter Sunday in the Christian calendar. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, the Lenten season is a time for reflection, as well as preparation before the celebrations of Easter. It a season where Jesus Christ's sacrifices remembered. During this period, fasting from both food and festivities is practiced. It then ends on Easter, where the resurrection of Jesus Christ is celebrated.
Lenten season is strictly celebrated in the Philippines. As a country that has a majority of Christian in its population, the Lenten season has a big role in our culture.
Devoted Christians follow all the traditions seriously, from attending Ash Wednesday to waving the palaspas in church.
However, this year's celebrations were done differently. With the risk of spreading the virus still present, most traditions were done at home or with limited people only.
Devoted Christians have no choice but to use social media platforms in order to join the masses online. Most churches held their masses online, one example is through Facebook live, while some churches that are located a bit far from critical areas, still held their masses physically but with limited attendees and health protocols observed. As pandemic still seems to be lurking around, we have to accept the fact that limitations in physical contact are a must. However, the pandemic also reminds us to continue believing in God and have faith in him. Let this be our time to have a healthier spiritual life that will help us have a stronger bond with God.
