ILOCOS SUR-E!!!

The Kannawidan Festival is known to celebrate the anniversary of the province of Ilocos Sur.

Many local people go to events that were part of the celebration. Many tourists also aspire to witness the festival for street dancing and marching band competition were also held and is fun to watch.
Kannawidan attracts many people and that’s what makes the festival meaningful. We show people our culture, and they witness the differences of each city/municipality. All Ilocanos always look forward to it, and also receive many positive comments from tourists. However, all of this was suddenly halted due to one enemy, the Coronavirus.

Not only the Philippines but many countries all over the world have been affected by this virus. It caused severe damages to the economy and personal lives of people, as well as the systems in their respective countries as a whole. Physical contact with other people is extremely risky, for the transmission of the virus can be done with just a touch from an infected individual. Since physical contact between people has been highly advisable to avoid, this meant that Kannawidan is impossible to celebrate in the usual way. The highlight events of the occasion need a crowd, so this extremely challenged organizers on how will they still make it possible to celebrate, despite this situation.

Fortunately, technology has advanced as years have passed. Many events all over the world held their events on different platforms such as Facebook and YouTube. Many of the events in last year’s Kannawidan Festival celebrated were held this way too.

There were still some events that allowed people to attend but social distancing must be practiced and wearing PPE's mustn't be forgotten. I must say that the change was very obvious and it’s highly strange for me as an Ilocano. But due to the situation of today, all we can do as a citizen of our country is contribute what we can. Let us follow the health protocols if we want COVID-19 to be over as soon as possible.  Someday, Ilocos Sur will SURELY celebrate Kannawidan normally again.
