Viva! Tara na Kababaihan!

The National Women’s Month falls in March and is a very special month for women. This is a time where women around the world commemorate the hardships that were faced in the past and to honor their sacrifices by gathering together and spread awareness worldwide about the rights of women as a human as well. In the Philippines, this year’s National Women’s Month theme is “Juana Laban Sa Pandemya: Kaya!” which emphasizes the hard work and hardships that were faced by women during this pandemic.

The women of Vigan, also called Bigueñas, were popularly known for their great contributions to the country, like in craftsmanship and artistry. Their products include abel from loom weaving.

Some were known for their bravery, like Gabriela Silang, a legendary woman who fought side by side with men in order to reclaim the freedom of their territory.

Women of Vigan also have great importance in the industry of food and culture. Serving dishes that show our culture, just like the empanada and okoy. There are many more things that women of Vigan can do.

If they say that women are not capable of doing what men can, I have to strongly disagree. As a woman myself, I have seen what we are capable of, and I’m proud to say that we can do just as much of what men can with proper preparations and training. And strength isn’t only limited to physical, for women can show their strength in different aspects of life. Just like their ability to take care of people and providing them the support that they needed. The way they make sure their children were well and good. Making sure that everyone in their family was loved.

The Bigueñas have a great contribution in shaping how Ilocos Sur is now. Without them, we wouldn’t witness the beauty of this Vigan. The past is over but we must not forget the sacrifices of our ancestors. We must continue to strive in spreading awareness of our rights as humans. Viva! Tara na Kababaihan.
