What Did We Do? What Could We Do?

Have you ever experienced having your parents tell you something like, “It used to be cold and breezy back then during our time, now it’s so hot even at night,” or anything about the climate back then? Well, I surely did. When I was young, I’ve been hearing my parents complain about the weather, which made me wonder, WHY DID EARTH’S CLIMATE BECOME SO HOT? Fortunately, as I grew older and learned more things at school, I learned about climate change and global warming.

So, what exactly are these two? According to NASA, climate change is a long-term change in the average weather patterns that have come to define Earth’s local, regional, and global climates. These changes have a broad range of observed effects that are synonymous with the term. While global warming is the long-term heating of Earth’s climate system observed since the pre-industrial period (between 1850 and 1900) due to human activities, primarily fossil fuel burning, which increases heat-trapping greenhouse gas levels in Earth’s atmosphere. The term is frequently used interchangeably with the term climate change, though the latter refers to both human- and naturally produced warming and the effects it has on our planet. As I further learned about things regarding this topic, I was shocked at first to discover that it was the deeds of humans that caused such horrible things to happen. I thought back, “What could have happened if our ancestors did not abuse our resources?” and “Is it too late to do something about it?” CERTAINLY NOT.

In accordance with this,  the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Climate Change Service (DENR-CCS) pushes through with its fully-loaded activities – most of it to be held virtually – from November 19 to 27, 2020, while the COVID-19 is still present in the country. This year’s theme for the National Climate Change Consciousness Week (NCCCW), is “Adapting for a Sustainable Future.” This annual week-long celebration aims to spread awareness on global warming and climate change, in order to promote the development of our country’s economy, as well as the preservation of the natural resources that future generations can use.

It is important for us to participate in spreading awareness and actually doing actions regarding climate change and global warming. As students, we can’t do much for we still don’t have the authority to do so, worse we can’t even go out of our houses due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But with this opportunity given to us, we can use our youthful voices to actually do something good, not only for our country but also for the whole world. Many programs were also implemented by the government about caring for our environment. The opportunity is directly served to us, we must take advantage of it and do something good every once for a while. Let us use social media for a good cause. It is our ultimate weapon, thus wield it with wisdom.
